Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born on the 22nd of November, 1984 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. Melanie Sloan, her mother, is from a Bronx Jewish family. Karsten Johansson, her father, is Danish born architect. She has a sister, Vanessa Johansson, who is also an actress, a brother, Adrian, with a twin brother named Hunter Johansson, born three minutes before her and a paternal half brother, Christian. Her grandfather was writer Ejner Johansson.Johansson began acting in childhood, shortly after her mother started inviting her to auditions. When she was eight she made her professional acting debut in "Sophistry" Off-Broadway musical with Ethan Hawke at New York's Playwrights Horizons. Although she would often audition for commercials, she began restricting her film auditions due to her unwillingness to accept rejections. When she was nine, she made her film debut as John Ritter’s daughter in North (1994) the film that was an action-packed fantasy. In the following years, she had minor roles in Just Cause (1995), as the daughter of Sean Connery and Kate Capshaw's character, and Lucy Fell (1996), she was the character Amanda in Manny & Lo (1996). She was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award as Best Female Lead in Manny & Lo.
