Bernadette L. Peters, born Bernadette Lazzara on February 28, 1948, is an American actor and singer. She has been in numerous musical theatre productions, TV and films, as well performing solo concerts as well as recording. Her career spans over five decades. She is one of the most highly and critically acclaimed Broadway performers, having received nominations for seven Tony Awards, winning two (plus an honorary award), and nine Drama Desk Awards, winning three. She is one of the most highly praised Broadway performers, having won four Tony Awards and winning two (plus an honorary award) as well as nine Drama Desk Awards, which she won three. The early stage work she did was well-respected and her appearances in The Muppet Show, The Carol Burnett Show and other television shows. The actress also earned praise for her roles in movies such as Silent Movie and Pennies from Heaven. Her return to the stage was in the 1980s.
