Shirley MacLaine

Shirley MacLaine was born Shirley MacLean Beaty in Richmond, Virginia. Her mother Kathlyn Corinne (MacLean), was a drama instructor from Nova Scotia, Canada, and her father, Ira Owens Beaty, psychologist and professor, as well as a real estate agent, came from Virginia. Her brother, Warren Beatty, was born on the 30th of March 1937. Her ancestry is English as well as Scottish.Shirley was tallest of her ballet classes at the Washington School of Ballet. Just after she graduated from Washington-Lee High School, she packed her bags and left towards New York. The producer was constantly not correctly naming her when she auditioned for Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s "Me and Juliet". Shirley MacLean Beaty became Shirley MacLaine then changed her name to Shirley MacLaine. Later, she was a part of "The Pajama Game" as a singer as well as an understudy for Carol Haney. After a few months of the show's run Shirley was scheduled to leave the show to play the main part in "Can-Can" but ended having to fill in for Haney who had fractured her ankle and was unable play. Three months later, she would once more be a substitute for Carol after another injury. It happened on the same night as Hal B. Wallis, the producer of the film. Wallis signed MacLaine to a contract for five years with Paramount Pictures. Within three months, she was off to film The Trouble with Harry (1955)
