Nicole Kidman is a Hollywood star known for being one of the most well-known Australian immigrants. She was born in Honolulu (Hawaii) to Janelle Ann (Glenny), who is a nurse instructor as well as Antony David Kidman who is a biochemist, clinical psychologist and biochemist. The actress is of Scottish, Irish, and English descent. The family relocated to Washington, D.C. shortly after Nicole was born. Nicole's father conducted his breast cancer research there. Nicole returned to Sydney, Australia three years later, where she was raised. Young Nicole's first love was ballet, however she soon took up acting and mime (her first stage role was as a bleating sheep at the Christmas pageant at her elementary school). In her adolescent years acting was a major factor in edging out other arts and was a sort of sanctuary. While the rest of her classmates went out to have fun in the sun and the fair-skinned Kidman retreated to dark rehearsal spaces to perfect her craft. Kidman was a regular at the Philip Street Theater, where she received a private letter of praise and encouragement from audience participant Jane Campion (then a film student). Kidman later dropped out of high school in order to pursue acting full-time. When she was just 16 she was able to get a part in the Australian Christmas classic Bush Christmas (1983). That appearance touched off a flurry of film and television offers, including a lead in BMX Bandits (1983) and a turn as a schoolgirl-turned-protester in the miniseries Vietnam (1987) (for which she won her first Australian Film Institute Award). With the help of an American agent, she finally made her US debut alongside Sam Neill in the at-sea thriller Dead Calm (1989).
