Marin's parents met while working as members of the Peace Corps. She was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and her family relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, when she was just four months old. Her brother Mark was born two years later. Her father, Rodney, is a retired teacher at a school. Margaret her mother is a judge in the Massachusetts Superior Court. Marian was a keen dancer and she studied until the age of 16, after an injury to her ankle ended her dreams. Though she was concerned about her choice to pursue acting, her parents nonetheless urged her to follow her dream, however, they urged her to pursue an MBA so that she could possibly fall back on teaching if circumstances didn't work out. She graduated from Brown University and then enrolled at New York University, where she claims to be pretty poor in the acting classes. Randall who was director of the New York theatre director, was her husband. After their success the couple relocated to Hollywood where they leased a house. Following the success of the sitcom Two and a Half Men (2003), she was cast as Judith Harper and made several guest appearances on Law & Order Special Victims Unit (1999)
