Marin had her parents' approval while she was working in the Peace Corps. Born in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and then moved with her family to Boston, Massachusetts when she was just four months old. Two years later her brother Mark was born. Her father, Rodney, is a retired teacher in the school system. Her mother, Margaret, is a judge at the Massachusetts Superior Court.Marin was ballerina, and she studied dance until age 16, when an ankle injury ended her dancing aspirations. While concerned about her decision to go into acting, her parents nonetheless advised her to follow her passion, but they urged her to pursue an advanced degree so that she could be able to fall back on teaching in the event that things did not work out. After having graduated from Brown University, she enrolled at New York University. She says that she was terrible in the acting classes she took. In 1992, she was introduced to her husband Randall who was an experienced New York theater director. After their success the couple moved to Hollywood where they bought a house. Following the success of the sitcom Two and a Half Men (2003) and she was cast in the role of Judith Harper and made several guest appearances on Law & Order Special Victims Unit (1999).
