John Witherspoon

John Witherspoon (1723-1794), was the only clergyman who was the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and served in the New Jersey convention that ratified the document. Witherspoon could have likely been elected to the Constitutional Convention if he hadn't been attending the Convention in Philadelphia while drafting a constitution for his own congregation. Also, he was the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitutional Articles. As the president of Princeton, Witherspoon educated five delegates to the U.S. Constitutional Convention of 1787, including Virginia's James Madison, as well as scores of individuals who served as judges and justices, members of Congress as well as the members of states that ratified conventions.
