Cassandra Peterson was born in Manhattan, Kansas, and was raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. At the age of 17 she became the youngest of the showgirls to perform on the Las Vegas stage in "Vive Les Girls" the show that was held at the Dunes Hotel. She was influenced by Elvis Presley and traveled to Europe to explore a career in singing and acting. She was a major character in Federico Fellini's Roma (1972), and also performed all over Europe in an Italian rock band. After the move to Hollywood, she joined The Groundlings, L.A.'s most famous improv comedy group. The group lasted for four and a half years. She auditioned in 1981 for the role of horror hostess at the Los Angeles television station. Elvira's Movie Macabre (1981), her show, and her new character Elvira became overnight hits.
